CREATION TOOLS: SAMPLES of student work
When I first imagined using iPads in my science classroom, I assumed that there existed a plethora of high-quality interactive apps to learn and master science content. And I couldn't have been more wrong! While there were hundreds of science apps available for purchase, most were nothing more than a digital version of a textbook, or even just a list of equations. And, because Flash and Java are not compatible with the iOS platform, most online interactives (PhET, etc) would not work on our new technology. In the year since then, many awesome new apps have arisen, and many of the awesome web-based tools are in the process of converting to HTML.
Instead of focusing on science apps, I instead sought ways that students could use the iPads at tools for synthesizing and applying their knowledge--to create digital notes, digital lab reports, presentations, animations, screencasts, video analysis, video conferences, and a variety of other things. I began asking my students to not just learn the content, but to create teaching tools to demonstrate their understanding and share it with other audiences. Because iPads have built-in cameras for recording photo and video, as well as microphones for recording voice and touch screens for easily creating sketches, this new tool allowed a diverse population of students with a variety of learning styles to find different ways of accessing and sharing the content. |
